Kingfisher – Malachite

Hi Friends,

Last weekend I was a Marievale bird reserve in Johannesburg with my colleages. It was the second visit, but this time we where there little earlier. We went and took our positions in one of the Hides and waiting for some shots.

It was more than an hour shooting the normal ducks… All of a sudden came the Kingfisher 🙂 Here we go… Started clicking clicking clicking… I would like to share some of the pics that came out bit nicer.

While we where photographing the kingfisher, there cam a couple of Bird experts, who also sat next to us in the Hide and gave us bit more information about Kingfisher bird and the variety it belongs to.

This one is the the Malachite Kingfisher (Alcedo cristata) and is also known as a river kingfisher and which is widely said to be distributed in south africa and also in Sahara.

This is one of the small kingfisher, as I saw it should be around 13 cm in length. The colour of the upper parts of this bird is bright metallic blue. The head had a crest of black and blue feathers and the face, cheeks and the front body are rufous with white patches on the throat and rear neck sides.

The bill was reddish orange in colour and the legs where bright red. This seems to be a common species of reeds and rank vegetation near the slow moving water or ponds. The flight of the Malachite Kingfisher is rapid and very very fast… you can see it from my pictures as the short rounded wings whirring until they appear a mere blur and glad that I could get few pictures as it usually flies low over water.

Enough about the bird, Enjoy the pictures..

Till next time,

Cheers,

Kamal
